Women in the Operas of Mozart, Verdi and Wagner

Nine Tuesday Afternoons and
One Special Sunday Afternoon Event

Introduction

During the winter and spring of 2023, we'll explore the role of women in the operas of Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. Although Mozart (b. 1756) pre-dated Verdi and Wagner, both of whom were born in 1813, many of the women in his operas are surprisingly stronger characters than the women in the works of the other two composers. All classes will be by Zoom. We will provide comprehensive information about each opera that we study plus links to the music that we hear, popular benefits that other opera appreciation courses may not offer.

The course is open to experienced opera lovers and to newcomers. Prior to each class, background information on the opera, including recommended reading, watching, and listening, will be posted on the Website. All classes will be recorded. Links to the class recording and to the video clips will be available after each class. If the day and time of the course doesn't work for you, feel free to sign up and enjoy the classes at your convenience.

Instructor Margie Satinsky

Margie Satinsky is a long-time opera lover who has attended more than 200 performances in the United States and Europe. She has taught opera appreciation classes since 2012, both independently and through OLLI at Duke. Her classes have focused on Highlights of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD, Russian opera, a Tribute to Black Opera Singers, In a Different Voice (different voice types), and other special topics. Margie is a founder and President of the Triangle Wagner Society.

More Optional Sunday Afternoons Triangle Wagner Society (TWS) Programs

Course participants will have the opportunity to attend not only the February Triangle Wagner Society (TWS) program, but also other TWS programs. With the exception of the January program, all programs will be live at The Forest at Duke. TWS records all programs so members and guests can watch and listen at their convenience. The programs are free to those who have paid TWS membership dues for 2023. The guest fee is $15/person
